BAFTA announced its TV award nominations today with Netflix’s “The Crown” leading the way with eight nominations. Another Netflix show, “Demon 79 (Black Mirror),” came in second with seven nominations while BBC’s “Happy Valley,” Apple TV’s “Slow Horses,” and BBC’s “The Sixth Commandment” all snagged six bids apiece.

Several US shows did well, too, with HBO’s “The Last of Us” and “Succession” each receiving five nominations — the same as ITV’s drama “The Long Shadow.” The BBC documentary “Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland” and “The Eurovision Song Contest 2023” each received four bids.

“The Crown” was nominated in all the big categories, including Best Drama Series, Actor for Dominic West, and Supporting Actor for Salim Daw. It also received two Supporting Actress nominations — Lesley Manville and SAG winner Elizabeth Debicki.

The other Best Drama Series nominees are “The Gold,” “Top Boy,” and “Slow Horses.” The latter earned a supporting actor bid for Jack Lowden, who competes against, among others, “Succession” Emmy champ Matthew Macfadyen. Macfadyen’s costar, Brian Cox, was also nominated (for Actor) while Harriet Walter snagged a Supporting Actress bid.

“Succession” was nominated for Best International Show alongside “The Bear,” “Beef,” “Class Act,” “The Last of Us,” and “Love & Death.” While “The Last of Us” SAG winner Pedro Pascal was snubbed Bella Ramsey did make the cut for. The other Actress nominees are Anjana Vasan (“Demon 79 (Black Mirror)”), Anne Reid (“The Sixth Commandment”), Helena Bonham Carter (“Nolly”), and Sarah Lancashire (“Happy Valley”).

Meanwhile, Actor contenders West and Cox are up against Kane Robinson (“Top Boy”), Paapa Essiedu (“The Lazarus Project”), Steve Coogan (“The Reckoning”), and Timothy Spall (“The Sixth Commandment”).

On the comedy side of things, “Big Boy,” “Dreaming Whilst Black,” “Extraordinary,” and “Such Brave Girls” are nominated for the top prize. David Tennant (“Good Omens”) is among those nominated for Male Comedy Performance while “Fleabag” alum Jamie Demetriou (“A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou”) is also in contention. Taj Atwal (“Hullraisers”) and Sofia Oxenham (“Extraordinary”) are among those competing for Female Comedy Performance.

“Big Boys” is also nominated for Best Comedy Writer for Jack Rooke, while Demetriou was also recognized in that category. “Succession” writer Jesse Armstrong was cited for Best Drama Writer alongside while Charlie Brooker and Bisha K Ali reaped bids for “Demon 79 (Black Mirror).”

Despite earning the most nominations, “The Crown” was snubbed in the Best Director (Fiction) category. “The Last of Us” helmer Peter Hoar was recognized in that category alongside BAFTA TV favorite William Stefan Smith (“Top Boy”).

The first batch of winners will be announced on April 28 — those are the BAFTA TV Craft Awards. Meanwhile, the main ceremony will take place a few weeks later on May 12.
